BREAKIN' OUT

Nicolas is an intelligent, happy and hopeful young man. His attractive parents, Thierry and Laetitia, love him very much, but they have been playing a dangerous game: trafficking drugs. On Thierry’s birthday, as the couple are being pursued by the police, Thierry loses control of their car and collides with a truck. Laetitia survives the accident only to be arrested for drug possession, but Thierry dies. On the day of his father’s funeral, Nicolas must endure the indignity and further tragedy of seeing his mother hauled off to prison.

Child Services places Nicolas with a stable and loving foster family headed by Bernard and Eliane Delmas. Bernard and Eliane do their best to make Nicolas feel safe and welcome, but the boy agonizes over his loss and his mother’s pending trial. Bernard and Eliane’s pretty but snooty daughter, Elodie, is less welcoming to the young interloper, reminding him he’s just passing through. Her popular boyfriend, Merignac, even taunts Nicolas over his mother’s abject condition.

Fortunately, Nicolas finds a new friend in “Tanker,” a boy his own age, whose father is housed in the same prison as Laetitia. Tanker counsels Nicolas on his legal options but admits that Laetitia’s prospects are grim. Unwilling to let due process run its course, Nicolas hatches a bizarre plot to free his mother.
